Energy Ministers: 84% of Households Still Use Solid Fuels

The Minister of Energy, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Buah has revealed that about 84% of households rely on solid fuels such as wood and charcoal for cooking and that accounts for about 13,400 deaths each year, from household air pollution. According to Hon. Kofi Buah due to this statistics, the government of Ghana has put in place programmes and policies that would directly improve on the general health and lives of Ghanaians. Government through the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the Energy Commission, partners including Ghana Alliance for Clean Cook stoves and stakeholders have introduced several programmes and initiatives to steadily transit Ghana from a solid fuel use country to cleaner fuel using country in the nearest possible time. The Energy Minister intimated that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has been promoted since the 90s as a safer, cleaner and healthier fuel for cooking, with the aim of making LPG the first choice domestic cooking fuel in Ghana. He made this submission during a three day conference organized by the Global Alliance for Clean Cook stoves Ghana (GHACCO), which is on a mission to catalyze the uptake of clean and efficient fuels through a market-based approach to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment. However, Hon. Kofi Buah indicated that the distribution of 4,000 pieces of 6kg cylinders and cooking stoves with all related accessories is ongoing in many parts of the country. ...this is part of a planned distribution of 53,000 pieces of LPG cylinders and cooking stoves with all related accessories in about 13 to 17 district by the end of 2014, he maintained.
