A 22-year-old coconut seller has been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for cutting the left hand of his friend with a cutlass during an argument. Kwabena Agyare, alias Bukari, the convict, also inflicted cutlass wounds on the jaws and beneath the eyes of Akwasi Asare, the victim. His pleaded guilty. Kwabena Agyare appealed to the court not to send him to jail but allow him to go and work and raise GHC1,000 to compensate the victim, but his plea was thrown out. Briefing the court presided over by Mr William Boampong on the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector Guilliver Tenkorang said that the victim is a coconut seller and a resident of Bosore, near Kenyase. He said about a month ago, the victim approached Kwabena Agyare and collected his mobile phone to make a call. Whilst making the call, the phone fell into a gutter filled with water, and that damaged the phone. Kwabena became offended and demanded that the victim buy him a new phone, and in order not to cause any further problems, the victim obeyed. At about 9.00pm on February 12, the victim met the convict at Suame roundabout, approached the convict and warned him not to offend him in this life. A misunderstanding ensued between them and they started fighting. In the process, the convict took a cutlass from a witness in the case and inflicted cutlass wounds on the jaws and left arm of the victim. The victim fell and started bleeding. The convict, sensing danger, rushed to Suame Police Station to report himself. He was detained and put before court after investigations.
