Salaries Of Six Teachers Blocked

The Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), in the Northern Region, has embargoed the salaries of six teachers for absenteeism and lateness to school. The action followed a recent unannounced visit to a basic school in the municipality by Mr Abdul Alhassan Red, Municipal Chief Executive of Savelugu/Nanton, where only two of the eight teachers were at post. Mr Alhassan Red, announced this at a programme for Heads of Department and staff of the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality, to interact with Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, Northern Regional Minister at Savelugu. Mr Alhassan Red said the affected teachers were referred to the Municipal Directorate of Education, after which the necessary procedures were followed before their salaries were blocked (embargoed) in March this year. He said the move was to restore discipline, as well as ensure punctuality amongst teachers, to improve the fallen standards of education in the municipality. He said the unannounced visits would continue, and those who would be late or absent from school for no reason would face a similar sanction. Alhaji Muniru called on civil and public servants to be professional in the discharge of their official duties, cautioning against acts that tended to thwart the efforts of government at bringing development to communities. He stressed that If you want to do politics, resign and join the politics, instead of hiding behind your jobs as civil servants to propagate your political agenda. He cautioned against lateness to work, saying, it did not promote productivity. The Minister also interacted with Heads of Department and staff of the Karaga District Assembly, and urged them to put up their best as government worked to improve their conditions of service to ensure development. Alhaji Muniru later paid courtesy calls on the Chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Mahama Abukari, Chief of Nanton, Nanton Naa Alhassan Sulemana, Chief of Tampion, Tampion Naa Alhassan Andani, and Chief of Karaga, Kar-Naa Mahama Adam. He asked for the co-operation and support of the chiefs towards the administration of the region. The chiefs appealed to government to improve roads linking their towns and communities to others to ease transportation and improve business.
