Sekondi Nursing/Midwifery Training School is congested

The Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery Training School with a student population of 548 is currently grappling with congestion both in the classrooms and with hostel facilities. This is due to the increased number of students, Madam Agartha Ekuban, Principal of the school said on Monday. She said the classrooms, constructed to accommodate 30 students are currently being occupied by 80 students, creating inconveniences and affecting teaching and learning, as well as posing a health risk for both tutors and students. She said a four-storey classroom block started by the government had stalled since 2003 due to non-payment of the contractor undertaking the project. Madam Ekuban said the Ministry of Health was informed about the abandoned project when she assumed office in 2010, but had not received any response from the Ministry. The Principal of the school expressed these sentiments at the commissioning of a mechanized borehole for the school, which was funded by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, at a cost of GHc8,000.00. She expressed her profound gratitude to the MP for the kind gesture and appealed for a poly tank to store water in view of the perennial water shortage in the school. Madam Ekuban said the borehole would resolve the water shortage experienced by the school due to erratic water supply by the Ghana Urban Company Limited, saying that, students sometimes travelled long distances to fetch water, which disrupts academic work. The school offers diploma in Registered General Nursing and Midwifery courses. Mr. Okyere Darko-Mensah said he was touched by the request put before him by the management of the school and assured that a poly tank would soon be provided to boost water storage. The MP said he would construct more mechanised boreholes at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Kwesimintsim Police Station and New Takoradi and provide poly tanks to some communities in the constituency.
