Hundreds of Northern Ghana residents have been displaced by severed rainstorms that battered towns and villages in parts of the Northern Region on Tuesday.
The rainstorms destroyed houses in areas such as Gumbihini, Kukuo, Nyohini, Jakarayili, Kpanbegu and Sagnarigu, all within the Tamale Metropolis.
The rainstorms also caused significant damages to portions of the official residences of the northern regional minister and his deputy.
�In fact it was a very devastating and it ripped roofs of many communities,� Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini said.
According to Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, aid workers from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have been assessing the extent of damage caused by the rainstorms in a region that is famous for recording major floods and thunderstorms.
�NADMO has been on top of the job; right from the onset of the disaster they have been in the field doing the assessment to get the needs of the victims,� he said.
Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who is also the MP for Sagnarigu, said both the NADMO headquarters in Accra and the Ministry of Interior have been mobilizing relief items to be sent to victims.
The NADMO office in the Northern Region is on record as having said that about 16 districts in the region have so far been affected by severe floods.
Historically, the Northern Region has over years been battered by heavy floods and ruthless rainstorms. In 1999 and again in 2007, major floods devastated the three regions in the north of the country.
According the national relief agency, NADMO, the 2007 floods affected close to 275,000 people in the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions of the country.
