Nigerian Fined GH3,600 For Causing Harm

A Nigerian woman who poured hot water meant for the preparation of Eba a local food, on a 10 year old girl was on Wednesday sentenced to pay a fine of GHC3,600. Chinere Oburoh in default will go to jail for one year. This was after Oburoh had pleaded guilty to causing harm and the court presided over by Sedina Agbemava convicted her accordingly. Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said on May 19, 2011, at about 0900 hours, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Tesano, had a tip off from an unknown caller to the effect that a woman had poured hot water on a Nigerian girl schooling at Jerusalem Preparatory School at Tabora. According to the caller, Oburoh was the victims aunty, and had kept the minor indoors without sending her to the hospital for treatment. The police proceeded to the victims school and on an enquiry obtained the name of the victim, who had severe burns on her back and other parts of the body. At DOVVSU, Tesano, the victim revealed that she was asked by the accused to soak her childrens clothes in a basin for washing but was slow in doing that. She said the accused became angry and slapped the victim and then poured the hot water on her, resulting in the severe burns.
