Over thousand security officers to be on duty at grand durbar

More than 1,000 security officers, drawn from the military, police and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) would be on duty to ensure that nothing goes wrong at the grand durbar to climax the 15th anniversary celebration of the enthronement of Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second, as the 16th Asante King. The event would come off at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, on Sunday, May 11, and is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama and other high profile personalities, including diplomats and foreign dignitaries. There would also be on hand, firefighters and about 200 health personnel, from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the National Ambulance Service, the Ghana Red Cross Society, the Saint Johns� Ambulance, and other paramedics to respond to emergencies. Mr Kojo Bonsu, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), announced this at a press briefing at the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene. He said the Anniversary Planning Committee and the Metropolitan Security Council will not take any chances, and are determined to make sure there is adequate security protection for the anticipated huge crowd the event is going to attract. The Asantehene will ride from Abrotia - Amakom to the stadium in a palanquin amidst traditional drumming and appellations, extolling the historical feat of Asanteman. Dr Kwaku Boateng, member of the Planning Committee, urged comportment to make the anniversary a big success. The people should stay away from alcohol, show good understanding and co-operate with the security personnel. Official celebration of the anniversary began on February 16, and activities already held, include inter-denominational service, photo exhibition, remembrance service for past Asante Kings and durbar of queens.
