Journalists Blamed For The Country's Woes

Mr George Coleman Executive Director of Eastern Development Advocacy, a Non-governmental Organization, has blamed the media for the socio-economic woes of the country. Mr Coleman, a retired journalist and formerly with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) explained that due to the meager salaries of journalists in the country, many are compelled to accept financial gifts from politicians to compromise their positions on issues. This, he said, enables politicians to take the country for a ride and forget their duties to the electorate and the country. Mr. Coleman, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Koforidua said the pressure on journalists to compromise their position made him to quit working for the GBC. Mr. Coleman explained that as a result of the compromise, relevant questions about the nation that needs answers are not asked when journalists interact with politicians and policy makers. Mr. Coleman said many journalists of today do not have the work at heart and have neglected investigative journalism to the background with the exception of a few committed ones. He called for the re-orientation of journalists and urged true patriots in the profession to rise up to the occasion to save the country.
