Pensioners Launch Medical Scheme

The Eastern Regional branch of the National Pensioners Association (NPA), has established a Pensioners Medical Scheme (PMS). The scheme, which is to be managed on behalf of the pensioners by Liberty Mutual Health(LMH), a private Health Insurance Company, would enable members to access quality health care beyond the coverage of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The Deputy General-Secretary of NPA, Mr. Stephen Boakye, who announced this at a press conference in Koforidua, explained that once a person holds a membership card to be issued this year jointly by the LMH and the NPA, members are assured of quality treatment . He said beneficiaries are entitled to free annual medical check-ups, which cover six critical areas that mainly affect older persons, namely, blood pressure, eye disease, high cholesterol, diabetes type two, prostrate and general physical examination. Mr Boakye said other benefits include physiotherapy, chemography, ambulance services and hospital admission . He said beneficiaries are expected to contribute GHC 4 per month, and the scheme would provide medical care to the values of 4,000 Ghana Cedis per annum to each beneficiary. Mr Boakye said only members of the NPA will benefit from the scheme, which takes off in February 2015. Mr Boakye urged all NPA members to take advantage of the biometric registration to continue to benefit from their pensions. Ms Juliette Dassebro, Head of Sales and Marketing Manager, said the scheme had selected clinics, hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies accredited by the scheme, and would be given stickers for easy identification.
