Police Disperses Crowd With Teargas At NHIS Registration Center

The Winneba Police Service has been forced to use teargas to disperse hundreds of people in Winneba who thronged the premises of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) registration center, according to reports. They had trooped to the center to register anew and renew their insurance cards. A lady who gave her name as Kukua said, the premises of the NHIS was overcrowded with quite a massive number of people as early as 5:30am Friday when she arrived. Speaking to Peace FM News she narrated that I got to the place around 5am and the place was already full up. We stayed there for some hours but never heard from the authorities. Later, we heard some numbers are been given to only 300 people for the day to register Some of them did not understand the action of the authorities. They exchanged words with them (authorities)then police personnel at the premises started firing teargas into the crowd. Though no one died, many got injured, she said. Kukua said she approached one of the police officers after the incident and questioned the use of teargas on them, and strangely the police said they [Police] intentionally did that to scare the crowd.
