Police Asked Media To Concentrate On Social Issues

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sampson Agbeko has urged the media to shift their concentration from politics and report on social issues affecting the society. He pointed out that the media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm should partner government to inform and educate the citizenry on policies and programmes that would improve their living standards and help reduce crime in the society. DSP Agbeko, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), said this in an interview with Ghana News Agency, in Sunyani on Tuesday. He said social issues such as teenage pregnancy is on the increase, but the media had not intensified education on its effect on the society and also the effectiveness of the education on the use of contraceptives. DSP Agbeko observed that the situation is worrying and called for stringent measures to be instituted to avert the trend as Most of these teenagers end up as single parents and unable to take proper care of the children. He said to address the problem, some traditions and customs such as Braguro and Dipo which protected young girls from indulging in pre- marital sex, leading to unwanted pregnancies should be rejuvenated. DSP Agbeko urged queen mothers, mothers and NGOs to collaborate to instill sanity among the teenagers.
