Special Schools Can't Reopen ...Due To Feeding Grant Arrears

Reopening of special schools in Ghana has been postponed indefinitely as a result of the failure of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to pay feeding grants of these schools. Heads of the various schools are, therefore, meeting to ram home demands to have the grants paid. Speaking on TV3s Midday Live on Wednesday, May 14, Mahela Narh, the Head of Akropong School for the Blind, said negotiations to have the GES meet their demands have proven futile. They said they are working on it, she said. Ms Narh noted that as a result of the non-payment of the grants most of these special schools have incurred huge debts and we get people calling us every now and then. She said what compounds the situation is that final year students are still in school, stretching the scanty available resources. Ms Narh observed that in the past, half of the grants were released before schools reopen while the rest are paid a few weeks after. But there are arrears for the second term, she mentioned. She appealed to the GES to speed up the process of securing funds from the Ministry of Finance so the schools can reopen.
