Pupils Stranded For Weeks As River Overflows Its Banks

SCHOOL PUPILS from ten communities surrounding Tadankro, a village near Aburi in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern region sit at home for weeks anytime it rains due to absent of bridge over the Nyensi River which overflows its banks. A visit by the Daily Heritage witnessed four pieces of palm nut trees stretched across the Nyensi river and serves as foot bridge for ten communities at the bank of the river, however, the coconut made footbridge submerges whenever there is a heavy downpour cutting off the surrounding villages from Tadankro Village which has both Primary and Junior High School and other economic facilities. School pupils in the affected villages stay at home till the water level in the river drops. The villages are Okotom,Kyerepong, Boadeso, Mpraeso, Prusu, Apetewso, Abenta, Asikubi, Asipase and Mariakrom. As school re-opens the School pupils hope and pray that it never rains to enable them walk freely to school. The Assembly member for Akwatiakwa Electoral Area, Isaac Ofori Opare told the paper that the situation gets worse during the raining season. He said sometimes school pupils sit at home for close to a month. He stated that farmers in the affected villages have their farm produce rotten because of the situation because they are unable to cross the river to sell their produce. The Assembly member is therefore appealing to the government to as a matter of urgency come to the aid of these villages by constructing a bridge and roads linking the villages to Tadankro to enable them transport their produce to the market.
