Organised Labour Concerned About Second Tier Pension

The leadership of organized labour in the Ashanti Region, has appealed for governments intervention to resolve the confusion over the management of workers second tier pension scheme. This comes amid growing anger by various labour unions at what they said was an unacceptable imposition of Trustees to manage the scheme in some public sector institutions. A joint statement issued and signed by the leaders of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), and the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) in Kumasi, and copied to the GNA on Wednesday said things could boil over. It warned that the leadership might not be able to control the displeasure of its members should the government fail to act quickly to get the right things done. The statement pointed out that it is inappropriate to force Trustees on workers whose salaries are not paid through the Controller and Accountant Generals Department. It therefore called on the National Pensions and Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to make sure that each organization went through the process to get its corporate Trustee to enable government to speed up the process of releasing funds from the Bank of Ghana (BOG) to the chosen Trustees to manage. They are also asking to be told how much had been collected and the interest accrued so far on the second tier pension. The statement urged all workers to remain calm as the leadership dialogues with the NPRA to streamline things.
