MOHAMMED Abdulai, an 18-year-old boy believed to be a member of a robbery gang operating in the Ashanti Region, is in the grip of the Obuasi Police Command. He was arrested with two guns and some ammunition. The arrest of the Burkinabe boy came shortly after he and his colleagues shot and wounded a police constable who was travelling from Obuasi to Akrofuom in the Adansi South District in a passenger vehicle on April 22, 2014. The police said Abdulai was part of the robbery gang, with other members whose names the suspect mentioned as Yakubu, Amadu and Ibrahim, all from Burkina Faso, Ghanas northern neighbour. DSP Kwabena Otuo-Acheampong, Obuasi Divisional Crime Officer, said Mohammed Abdulai was arrested yesterday around 4:30am at a police snap checkpoint on the Obuasi-Akrofuom road. The suspect was carrying two locally made shot guns, a locally made pistol, two knives, eight AA & BB cartridges, a face mask and a military cap, the police chief narrated. According to him, the suspected robber had concealed the weapons in a bag and was travelling in a taxi with four occupants when he was arrested. DSP Otuo-Acheampong said Abdulai mentioned one Yakubu, Amadu, and Ibrahim, all Fulanis from the Burkina Faso as his accomplices, during interrogation. The Crime Officer revealed that the gang had been a thorn in the flesh of commuters and residents of Obuasi and its surrounding communities. He said the 18-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of preparing for a robbery attack. His accomplices remain at large and the police had mounted a search for them. DSP Otuo-Acheampong, the arrestee, said the suspect was being held for investigation and would soon be put before court. The police officer appealed for information on the whereabouts of other suspects who are believed to be hiding in the Adansi area.
