IT IS now official! Parliament will not be able to reconvene on the May 27, 2014 to deliberate on issues affecting the country, as earlier scheduled, due to a general dry up of funds that has made it very difficult for the government to honour most statutory payments in the country.
An official communication from the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Emmanuel Anyimadu, to all members of Parliament has Tuesday, 3rd June, 2014 as the new date for the august house to reconvene, barring any further unforeseen circumstances.
�Pursuant to Standing Order 32(2), I, Emmanuel Anyimadu, Clerk to Parliament, hereby notify Hon. Members that the second Meeting of the Second Session of the Sixth Parliament will commence on Tuesday, 3rd June, 2014, at Ten O�clock in the forenoon at Parliament House, Accra,� the notice read. No reasons were given for the new date, but sources close to The Chronicle say Parliament is stark broke, for which reason it could not reconvene at the scheduled date.
The Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, on Monday, dropped the hint on the possibility that Parliament would not be able to reconvene due to lack of funds to finance the activities of the house. He has described the situation as shameful, as it is inimical to the effective functioning of the legislature and its oversight responsibilities.
Parliamentarians are complaining of delays in the release of statutory funds required for their constituency activities.
Statutory payments such as the MP�s Common fund are in arrears, holding back development in the various constituencies across the country.
