More Doctors For Upper West

There is relief in the Upper West Region as the health sector prepares to welcome nine medical doctors who have accepted postings to serve in the region. One of the nine doctors has already arrived and has begun work, while the remaining eight are expected to arrive within a month. The number of doctors arriving will raise the regions total number of medical doctors to 20, which is threefold the number at the beginning of the year. The Deputy Regional Director of Health for Pharmaceutical Service, Mr Ralph Hadzi, said all 11 districts in the region would now have a fully-qualified medical doctor to man their respective health posts. The intervention, he said, came after eight other medical doctors posted earlier to the region rejected the postings. Most of the doctors we are expecting virtually volunteered to come to the Upper West Region, he said. At the beginning of the year, only six of the 11 districts had medical doctors at post, including three who served at the Wa Regional Hospital. In view of the new development, the regional hospital in Wa will now have four doctors and the Lawra hospital, two. The rest of the health facilities at Nadowli, Jirapa, Nandom, Tumu and Wechau have one each. This leaves Wa West, Sissala West, Dafiama Busie and Lambusie Karni as the four remaining districts in the region without a medical doctor.
