A 38-year-old businessman and resident of Washington, a suburb of Gbetsile in the Kpone-Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region, overpowered two masked armed robbers who attacked him in his room Sunday dawn and seized their pump action gun. Robert Gyato, who is popularly known as 'No Case' in the area, told the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, at his residence that how he was able to overpower the robbers and eventually grab their pump action gun in a fierce struggle with them in his room remained a mystery to him. DCOP Vib-Sanziri, with the Ashaiman Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jonathan Ametepe Adams-Godoe, Chief Superintendent William Otu Larbi, the Ashaiman District Police Commander, and some personnel from the Greater Accra Regional Anti-Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited some robbery victims, including Mr Gyato, at New York and Washington, both suburbs of the Kpone-Katamanso District. Narrating his ordeal, Gyato said at about 2am last Sunday, three armed robbers, who he suspected to be between 16 and 18 years, broke the padlock to his burglar proof to gain access to the first floor of his house. Sensing danger, he said the robbers fired a shot through his louvers, and he had to hide his wife and five-year-old daughter. Realising that he was not opening the door, the robbers crushed it with a concrete block and gained access into his bedroom, where he bravely clutched the gun-wielding teen robbers and fiercely struggled with them in the room. �Few of the shots they fired missed targets and hit my walls during my struggle with them. I managed to push one of them through the window and he fell on the compound of my tenants while I was able to overpower the other two after I snatched their gun,� he recounted. With the gun in his hand pointing at the overpowered young masked robbers, Gyato said he could not kill them because he didn't know how to use the weapon, �so they managed to escape.� According to him, during the struggle, he screamed for help but no resident came to his aide, adding that as they escaped, he continued to scream yet nobody came out from their rooms to help him arrest the young robbers. Robert Gyato said later in the morning he reported the matter to the Ashaiman District Police, where he handed over the gun. Commending Robert Gyato for his bravery, DCOP Vib-Sanziri said the police would be mounting tents at some vantage points in the area to temporarily provide some security to residents while arrangements were made for a permanent police station. She advised residents to take their personal security more seriously.
