The local transport sector is expected to receive a facelift following the completion of a partnership to introduce world-class buses into the country.
The move is being spearheaded by Traccova Ghana limited, a wholly-owned Ghanaian company, in collaboration with Iveco Bus of Italy, a renowned company in the public transport sector.
The company will introduce its range of buses designed specifically for the tropical region of Africa into Ghana.
The Sales and Marketing Manager, Africa and Middle East of Iveco, Mr Harold Wilson Acquaye, in an interview with the GRAPHIC BUSINESS, said there was no efficient transport system in Africa which has resulted in numerous challenges in the transport sector.
According to him, there is no train or underground system as the commercial vehicle transport forms 80 per cent of the system, adding that �Iveco is thinking of bringing solutions to the transport sector of emerging markets such as Ghana.�
He said there were consultations with the Ministry of Transport in areas that needed attention as the company was ready to provide assistance to the ministry.
�Our engagement with stakeholders indicates that our products are needed. We are in to play a part to help solve the challenges facing the transport sector,� he explained.
The Managing Director of Traccova, Mr Ibrahim Anyars, also explained that the company was coming in with their expertise to help manage the transport system.
�We have realised that most transport companies in the country have problems with keeping their bus after selling them and that is why Traccova is coming in with vast experience and technical support to help fill that gap,� he said.
He said road transport was the most dominant means of transportation in Ghana with over 94 per cent of freight and passengers and that whereas many cities and towns could be reached by commercial transport, the inter -regional transport was normally characterised by bigger buses.
The company�s vision, he explained, was to introduce a wide range of products in the country, with future plans of assembling a plant in Ghana to have a full footing.
He said Traccova was also in discussion with major players such as the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union and some private operators to employ a holistic approach in transforming the transport sector.
