Breast, Cervical Cancers Are Treatable

Madam Joana Nyame, Executive Director of the Global Cervical Charity Foundation (GCCF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has said most diseases like breast and cervical cancer are preventable and can be treated, if detected early. She has, therefore, advised women to attend hospitals and health centres for regular checkups to help reduce cases of the diseases. Madam Nyame was addressing over 160 women at a Breast and Cervical Cancer screening and education at Offinso in the region. The programme, jointly organised by the Global Cervical Charity Foundation, Ghana Health Service and the Offinso Municipal Assembly, was aimed at sensitising the participants about the diseases. She noted that cervical cancer is among the leading causes of deaths among women worldwide, and that it is more fatal than Malaria, AIDS and Tuberculosis combined. The Executive Director indicated that her foundation was committed to reducing the impact of cervical and breast cancer, through awareness, detection, and prevention. Madam Nyame said one of the challenges facing the organisation was lack of means of transport, and appealed to the government to provide a vehicle to enhance its education programmes. Mrs. Beatrice Appiah, Offinso Municipal Director of Health, also explained the causes of both Breast and Cervical Cancer to the participants. She was not happy that the treatment of both breast and cervical cancer were not included in the National Health Insurance Scheme, and appealed to the government and the authorities of the Scheme to consider them for treatment. The Municipal Health Director commended the Global Cervical Charity Foundation for training some of the health personnel in the municipality to educate women about the diseases. A total of about 151 women were screened for breast and cervical cancer, and 13 of them with cervical cancer problems were referred to the Peace and Love Hospital for further treatment
