Police Question Korle Bu SSA Executive

The Dansoman Police yesterday invited the President and the Secretary of the Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Messrs Charles Offei Kwaw and James Clifford Oblitey, respectively, for questioning. That followed a report made to the police by the acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital about an intended meeting of the association which was likely to cause violence, fear and panic. The SSA of the KBTH and the board and the management of the hospital are engaged in a banter over alleged mismanagement of funds. In a letter to the police, the acting CEO, Rev Dr Albert O. Botchway, expressed concern over the fact that the intended meeting of the association at the conference room of the Maternity Block of the hospital was likely to cause violence, fear and panic. In response to the concerns, the police invited Mr Kwaw and Mr Oblitey for questioning. The Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr K. Antwi Tabiri, explained that the invitation to the two members of the SSA was to enable the police to find out the reason for the meeting and ensure peace at the hospital. We wanted to know if there was going to be a demonstration, he said. Agenda of the meeting During initial interrogations, Mr Tabiri said, the two executive members explained that the intended meeting was to discuss the attitude of the CEO of the hospital. After interrogations, he said, the two returned to the hospital. A scheduled meeting by members of the association at the hospital was delayed for about two hours as a result of the invitation of the two executive members by the police. Sources close to the SSA said the meeting was to discuss the content of a letter written to the President of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama, about the attitude of the CEO of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The CEO has been accused by the leaders of the association of intimidating them and not responding to their concerns on some issues relating to the hospital.
