Maritime University Urged To Promote Trade Among Member States

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, has called on member states of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) to continue pooling their resources and work towards removing barriers that hinder the continent from trading among itself. �As member states, we need to work together to enhance our cooporation to maximise the benefits of increasing trade and investment in the region. We need to work together and have easy access to each other to become a stronger continents�. Speaking at the eighth congregation of RMU in Accra, Ms Tetteh observed that one effective way to promote regional integration was for member states of RMU, especially the board of governors, to remain focused and never to deviate from the main reason for its establishment. Ms Tetteh said as the continent pursued regional integration and social development, the maritime sector should be considered as a major channel that could be used to enhance economic growth in the sub-region. The congregation, which was held at the RMU parade ground at Nungua, saw more than 200 graduands who had undergone two and four years� programmes awarded various certificates. Advice to graduands Ms Tetteh urged the graduands to use the training and knowledge they had acquired to devise innovative ways to help push the regional integration agenda. �Whatever knowledge and training you have acquired over the past years of your stay in the university should prepare and equip you to contribute your quota to the development of the continent,� she said. Ms Tetteh commended the management and board of RMU for putting in place advance and modern equipment to train the youth. Government contribution The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor, said over the past years, the government had channelled some of its resources into equipping RMU to be able to effectively discharge its duties and objectives. �Government gave RMU a grant of US$450,000 under the skills development fund to facilitate the acquisition of some modern equipment and tools to further empower management of the university to perform their operations.� According to Mrs Attivor, the government would continue to support RMU by providing the university with the needed assistance to expand its operations. RMU determined In his welcome address, the Rector of RMU, Captain Aaron Tuckson, said since the establishment of the university, RMU had trained qualified graduates who were occupying high positions in top organisations. He said the university would continue to devise effective means of enhancing its operations, adding that RMU would also continue to collaborate with the international maritime industry in its bid to train qualified and competent people.
