51-Year-Old Man Jailed 12 Years For Defilement

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court for defilement. The convict, Walden Mensah Adams, a sculptor, who portrayed himself as a bible studies teacher to the victim and her friend, is said to have sent the victims friend on an errand to enable him to execute his plan of defiling the victim. Immediately the friend left, Adams is said to have forcibly had sex with the victim. He then warned her not to disclose the act to anyone or he would strangle her. Adams pleaded guilty to the offence of defilement of a female under 16 years and was convicted on his own plea by the court, presided over by Ms Sedinam Agbemeva. Facts of the case The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Veronica Ofei, said the complainant was the grandmother of the nine-year-old victim. She said in January 2013, the victim, together with her friend, went to Adams house for their usual Bible studies. The convict, she said, sent the friend to buy him a bottle of Coca-Cola and took advantage of the absence of the friend to forcibly have sex with the victim. Mrs Ofei said Adams threatened the victim with death if she disclosed the ordeal she had gone through to anyone. The victim, out of fear, kept the incident to herself until April 2014 when she confided in her aunt, who in turn informed the complainant later. The complainant then lodged a complaint with the police, resulting in the arrest of Adams.
