Govt To Protect Textile Sector - Minister Assures

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has assured the local textile industries of the ministrys resolve to protect the industry against pirates and smugglers. He said the ministry would deploy the anti-piracy task force onto the markets to seize smuggled and pirated fabrics in the next 60 days. Mr Iddrisu gave the assurance at the unveiling ceremony of the 2014 Collection of the GTP Nustyle fabric by Tex Styles Ghana Limited, producers of GTP fabrics. According to Mr Iddrisu, the ministry has seized nearly 1,600 of smuggled wax prints that will soon be destroyed in the full glare of all the industry players. He expressed concern that the sector, which hitherto employed over 25,000 workers, now employed only 3,000 as the industry was collapsing due to the activities of smugglers of pirated textiles. Mr Iddrisu congratulated the management of the company for introducing the designs which sought to boost the morale of the team in Brazil. New design The new design, the second collection of Nustyle to be introduced this year, dubbed GAME, was introduced by the company to rally support for the senior national soccer team currently in Brazil to participate in the 2014 World Cup being hosted in that soccer-loving country. The theme of the new design is Friendship. GAME According to the Marketing Manager of GTP, Mr Steve Badu, the name GAME was chosen because of the tough and challenging environment the company operates as a result of the nefarious activities of pirates and smugglers. He intimated that despite the harsh economic condition and activities of pirates, which had gravely affected the performance of the textiles sector, GTP has survived due to its innovation, as well as its ability to give consumers what they want. Mr Badu said the collections were wholly made in Ghana with most of the cotton cultivated in northern Ghana and transported to the Volta Star factory at Juapong, where it was turned into grey baft before they were sent to Tema, where the designs were printed. He encouraged Ghanaians to patronise fabrics made by GTP and join in celebrating the achievements and success story of the company.
