Sentence Of Two Robbers Deferred

An Accra Circuit Court has deferred the sentencing of two persons who were said to have conspired and robbed two persons of GH120.00 and GH65.00, after they pleaded guilty to both charges. Jonas Akakpo, a washing bay attendant and Kwesi Francis, a drivers mate, were convicted on their own plea and remanded by the court to reappear on June 16 for sentence. They robbed one Malope Elisha of GH120.00 and another of his handbag and with an amount of GH65.00. Police Chief Inspector K. Adu said the complainant Malope Elisha is a driver resident at Suhum in the Eastern Region, whiles accused persons have no fixed places of abode. He said on June 2 at about 0200 hours the complainant arrived at St Johns near Achimota after off-loading goods from his bus and was paid GH120.00 and decided to pass the night at St Johns to return to Suhum the next day. The Prosecutor told the court that the accused persons attacked the complainant, with Kwesi holding both hands of the complainant at his back and Jonas and one other Kojo, now at large forcibly removed the money from his pocket. The Prosecution said the complainant quickly hatched a plan of arresting the accused persons and lured them to believe that he is also a criminal and needed some criminals to operate with. He said they boarded the complainants car through Dome, Kwashiman, Haatso, Atomic Junction and headed towards Kwame Nkrumah Circle. Police Chief Inspector Adu said on their way they picked a male passenger at 37 Military Hospital, and on reaching Afrikiko gardens near TV3, the accused persons ordered the complainant who was the driver to stop the car and he obliged. He told the court that Jonas held the passengers neck with his hands from behind whiles Kojo now at large collected his bag and Kwesi blocked the entrance of the car, preventing the passenger from escaping. The prosecution said they pushed the passenger out of the car and ordered the complainant to move the car which he did. The complainant alerted the police at a police check point near Kwame Nkrumah Circle and the accused persons were arrested but Kojo escaped. The accused persons during investigations both admitted the offences in their cautioned statements.
