Custom Officer Remanded For Sexually Abusing His Children

Michael Kojo Brentuo Acquah, a Custom Officer who sexually abused his four children was on Friday remanded into Police custody by an Accra Circuit Court. Acquah is being held on three counts of incest and four counts of defilement. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Acquah is expected to reappear before the Court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava on July 15. Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Veronica R. Ofei, who held brief for Assistant Commissioner of Police Moses Atibilla, said the complainant in the case was the victim�s mother and wife of the accused person. The accused and the complainant who had been married for the past 22 years reside at Mamprobi in Accra. The victims are from the ages of 20 and 10 months. The prosecutor said during the month of November 2010, the complainant noticed some changes with three of the victim�s name withheld. According to the prosecutor when she quizzed one of the victims, she revealed to her that the accused has been having sex with her. Prosecution said the complainant then examined her second daughter and her son who also disclosed that it the accused person was having sex with them. According to the prosecutor, the complainant detected that the two victims had sores and bruises in their sexual organs and anus. A report was made to the Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit of Ghana Police Service and accused person was arrested and arraigned. During the trial, prosecution said the complainant suffered repercussions from the relatives of the accused person for giving evidence. As a result, the accused person was discharged for want of prosecution. On May 18, this year, the accused person was seen in the night inserting his penis into the mouth of his 10 month son. Prosecution said the complainant after inquiring from her children they said the father had started abusing them sexually again. The case was reported again to the Executive Director of Enslavement Prevention Alliance �West Africa, who then lodged a complaint with the Police. Medical forms issued to the victim for treatment and examination indicate that they have been defiled by the accused person.
