Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Ohene Ntow, has described the action by the ten regional chairmen to call for early congress as an attempt to undermine the powers of the current national executives. He believes it is a crack at imposing on the leadership of the party to do their bidding against the constitution and the general good of the party. The Regional Chairmen of the main opposition party across the ten regions of Ghana on Monday called for an early Congress to elect the Flagbearer ahead of the 2016 general elections. At the said press conference, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the party, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, who read the statement for and on behalf of his nine other colleagues, petitioned the National Council (NC) of the party to change the date for the election of the party�s presidential candidate from December 6, to a day in September 2014. According to them, if the party maintains the December 6 date, every effort made to address the current issues confronting it would yield no positive result and would consequently cost NPP a great deal in its collective effort to unseat the ruling National Democratic Congress in 2016. Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh argued that �a date rather than what we are proposing, will only create ample platform for the insults, abuses, cross-fires, vilifications, imagine destruction of aspirants to drag for a long time.� The spokesperson for the group noted that the December 6 date would also coincide with district assembly elections which are slated for December, for which reason he said, �We cannot as a party focus on two elections (flagbearership and district assembly) � all at the same time.� Reacting the concerns raised by the Chairmen on Okay Fm�s �Adeakye Abea� Morning Show, Nana Ohene Ntow, also the spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen expressed surprise that the ten regional chairmen who are members of the National Executive Council (NEC) could chose to ignore the body they belong to organize a press conference to undermine the powers bestowed on the current executives to do due diligence in the party. �Surprisingly the regional chairmen who are supposed to be members of the National Executive Council have ignored the executives and the council to organize a press conference��it is becoming like some people have made up their minds to disrupt the current executives from doing their work in the party by making noise in public to compel the executives to do their bidding. If the regional chairmen are talking about party�s interest first, then they should allow the constitution of the party to work�.they cannot stand outside the constitution and talk about party�s interest. If you look at the constitution and the reason the regional chairmen are giving to go for early congress, it shows that they are either ignorant of the constitution or they are being diabolic��if they are really interested in the progress of the party, they should allow the executives to work in accordance with the constitution,� he pontificated.
