Volta Region Piloting E-learning In Three Districts

The Volta Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) is piloting an E-learning concept dubbed Volta Reads in the Keta, Ho West and Agotime-Ziope districts. The concept, being supported by Pencils of Promise, New York, would provide electronic reading devices loaded with books to improve academic performance in the Region. Mr Bright Dey, Regional Information Communication Technology (ICT), GES, said this at an ICT sensitisation workshop in Ho on Tuesday. The workshop was at the instance of Savana Signatures, a youth led organization with focus on development. Mr Dey said the devices would be loaded with over 350 books including textbooks and relevant stories to promote easy access to academic reading materials. He said the project would help address the inadequate textbook availability where an average of seven pupils in the region shared one textbook. Mr Frank Senyo Loglo, Assistant Registrar, Ghana Technology University College, Ho, said ICT was powerful tool for educational change and reform and that appropriate use of ICT could promote quality education. He therefore called for the integration of ICT into schools curriculum and not only as an add-on. ICT in schools increase interest in learning, attention span and classroom interaction, Mr Loglo stated. Mr John Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director, Savana Signatures, said his outfit was working towards integrating ICT in education in the Region. He said the Organization would soon train 100 teachers in the Region on ICT pedagogy and set up computer laboratories in schools. Mr Agbenyo said a Sexual Health Education (SHE) project with focus on adolescent and reproductive health would also be launched in the Region soon.
