The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mr Okoe Vanderpuije, has assured residents of Accra that the annual occurrence of floods in the metropolis would be brought to an end.
He said the assembly would be constructing drainage systems and also clear all structures on waterways to allow for free flow of water into the sea when it rained.
The mayor said this at a meeting in Accra held to welcome 16 assembly members of the AMA,10 businessmen and women and two members of staff who went on a tour of Columbia City in South Carolina in the United States of America.
According to him,"Residents of Accra cannot continue to suffer destruction to lives and property any time it rains heavily.�
Directive from the President
He said with regard to the massive devastation caused by rains in Accra a few weeks ago, the president had directed that the Conti Project, which was expected to be completed in five years, be divided into three stages to solve the problems of sanitation, environmental degradation and perennial flooding.
He said the trip by the delegation to the United States of America afforded them the opportunity to build capacities with regard to dealing with sanitation and were also exposed to best practices in environmental cleanliness. The visit lasted for 15 days.

Mr Vanderpuije noted that Accra would be free from floods if residents changed their attitudes. He said attitudinal change could be faster through vigorous education on sanitation and strict enforcement of the assembly�s bye-laws.
In this regard, he said, the assembly would distribute litter bins to all homes and offices to reduce indiscriminate disposal of both solid and liquid waste.
The mayor appealed to residents to collaborate with the assembly to ensure that its directives were followed to make Accra a clean city.
