Demonstrators To �Occupy Parliament House� In Next Protest

Organisers of the �Occupy Flagstaff� demonstration have said their next protest would target Parliament House to get parliamentarians to be proactive in holding government accountable. According to them, after staging a successful protest against the executive arm of government on July 1, their next target was parliament. Nana Kwasi Awuah, a convenor of the group, Concerned Ghanaians for Responsible Governance, told Accra based radio station, Citi FM that, their next move was to get the legislature to also sit up. The protestors used social media to mobilise about 300 people to hit the streets on Tuesday and presented a petition on their grievances to the Flagstaff House. Their aim was to draw government�s attention to issues, including the erratic power supply, the depreciating cedi, constant increases in taxes, fuel shortage, economic hardships and the non-implementation of the Senchi Consensus. They want the President to find solutions to the challenges facing the country. �Occupy Parliament House� Nana Awuah said their next move was to get Parliamentarians to be proactive in holding government accountable. �Indeed we are coming up with another protest for parliament house. We want to hold every arm of government accountable to us the people, because we put them there for a reason,� Nana Awuah said. �The only arm of government we didn�t get to choose them is the judiciary. But apart from the judiciary, we hold the executive and parliament responsible. We are yet to meet and deliberate on how to go about it. There are so many forms of protest and it may come about in a different form than what you saw yesterday.� The gathering Many of the people in Tuesday�s protest belonged to the middle class, including Ace Kojo Ankomah, a legal practitioner; Yoofi Grant of Databank; Dr Esi Ansah, a lecturer at the Ashesi University; Kofi Kapito, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency; Comfort Ocran of Legacy and Legacy; Ken Ofori-Atta, a co-Founder of Databank; Selorm Branttie, the Communications Director of IMANI Ghana; a former Chief Marketing Officer of MTN, George Andah, and others who took turns to address the crowd. Clad mainly in red and black attire, the protestors carried placards with messages including, �Things must change now�, �Rescue the value of Ghana�, �Yentie Obia�, �Boys abre�, �The King is naked�, �Ghanafuo abre�, �JM, Stop the corruption and think outside the box� and �Mahama Aden?�.
