President Mahama Commends World Vision

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed admiration at the interventions initiated by the World Vision Ghana (WVG) to improve the well-being of children and families in the country. The WVG is an international partnership of Christians whose mission is to work with the poor and oppressed to promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the goodness of God. It has provided assistance in such sectors as water and sanitation, health and nutrition, education, food security, gender and development, and microfinance in both rural and urban areas. President Mahama said WVGs contributions had impacted positively on the lives of 6.4 million children, especially the less-privileged, in the country. The President gave the commendation in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Sampson Ahi, at the 35th anniversary thanksgiving service of the WVG held in Accra last Sunday. UNICEF reports A UNICEF report indicates that about 6,570,000 children across the world, including Ghana, died before reaching their fifth birthdays due to water-related diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera. The report stated that those diseases had afflicted rural dwellers and reduced some able-bodied persons to suffer poverty and disability. It said these problems could have been prevented if those children had been given safe and clean water from their birth. President Mahama, therefore, commended the WVG for its interventions in drilling 3,800 boreholes fitted with hand pumps, rehabilitating broken-down boreholes in communities and providing rainwater harvesting systems for institutions to access safe and clean water. Commitment The National Director of the WVG, Mr Hubert Charles, said the WVG was looking forward to providing more water coverage for children and families by 2025.
