MUCG Gives SHS Students Entrepreneurial Skills

As part of the activities to commemorate the nations Republic Day, the Methodist University College Ghana (MUCG) organized its first Youth Entrepreneurship Academy Programme for some selected Senior High School (SHS) students in Accra. According to the Principal of the university, Rev Professor Samuel K. Adjepong, the purpose of academy programme is to expose high school students to entrepreneurial processes and to help develop entrepreneurial mindset in young people. Addressing guests and students at the programme, he noted that the experience will offer students the opportunity to exercise entrepreneurial spirit through fun and practical learning skills. MUCG is sowing the seeds of innovation and with a commitment to preparing young people to thrive in todays economy by bringing business world into the classroom and strengthening the connection between education and economic prosperity. Education is the ticket to success and the future of Ghana depends on an increased supply of educated, creative entrepreneurial citizens to create new business and jobs, the Principal stated. According to Rev. Adjepong the university believes that by teaching what makes a business successful at an early age, they inspire young men and women to explore the skills and problem solving techniques necessary to succeed in the rapidly changing world. On his part, the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Education Research and Training, Dr. Ato Essuman emphasized on the fact that its their duty as an academic institution to support the governments efforts at teaching skills and foster creativity and independence by providing entrepreneurship training. According to him, in a changing economy, entrepreneurship is the path to economic growth, this also stimulates job creation and that it is their hope students participating in the programme will help change their mindset and stimulate interest in looking at opportunities from an entrepreneurial perspective. MUCG acknowledges the learning environment in todays high school and realize that specialized curriculum such as entrepreneurship is unable to be taught in great detail. It is, therefore, the goal of MUCG Young Entrepreneurship Academy (YEA) to partner with high school to supplement learning by offering a deeper business curriculum. In this connection, a one-week YEA programme will be organized every year in July and August for SHS students to supplement this effort, the director emphasised.
