417 Pupils Share 2 Drinking Cups

PUPILS OF Sonsauso Municipal Authority Primary School in the EjisuJuabeng Municipality are not only facing problems of having access to good drinking water, but are battling other health hazards because as many as 417 pupils of the school drink from only two cups. Aside lack of cups for the pupils, the school has no place of convenience. This came to light when some staff of MTN, as part of this years 21 Days Yello Care volunteerism programme, toured the school. During the tour it further came to light that none of the pupils knew about no other profession apart from teaching and farming. About 90% of the pupils interacted with by the volunteers could not identify other professionals such as lawyers, bankers, journalists, medical practitioners, among others. This was because none of the above mentioned professionals had ever visited the community to serve as motivators or role models to them or even come into close contact with them. The staff of MTN who bemoaned the ignorance of the pupils, however, took time to explain to the pupils the existence of other professions and their importance to national development. The staff who took part in what looked like career building process later contributed individually to the tune of GH10,000.00 to buy bags of cement to refurbish the school. Aside the inability on the part of the pupils to identify other professions, the teachers were marking the pupils works on their laps, until MTN donated four office tables and three swiveling chairs to the school. The head of technical section of the company for Ashanti, Osei Akoto who made the presentation promised that considering the plight of the school, he would personally intervene for MTN Ghana Foundation to drill a bore hole, construct a place of convenience and teachers quarters for the school very soon. The Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Gertrude Mensah who received the items was thankful to MTN for its continuous support towards quality education in the country. She praised some of the teachers for their dedication to duty as most of them commute from Kumasi or Ejisu daily to school to teach the pupils.
