Students Fight For Sacked Minister

A group calling itself Concerned Tertiary Students of upper East region has threatened to demonstrate in Bolgatanga and Accra against National Democratic Congress (NDC) if President John Mahama refuses to reinstate Dr. Ephraim Avea Nsoh as upper East regional Minister. The group indicated plans to embark on the demonstration on July 14, 2014 in Accra and march to the Flagstaff House to compel the President to respond to their request and other petitions forwarded to him by other groups over the same issue. Even though James Zuuga Tiigah has been vetted for the position, the group says granting their request would be possible if the President sees the appointment Regional Ministers as a tool for the development of Ghana. A statement signed by the chairperson for the group, Juliana Azure called on the President to bring back Dr. Avea Nsoh in order for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to capture political power in future. The grouping sounded like members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) rather than a concerned faction of youth interested in the development of the region. According to the group, the development of the Upper East region cannot be entrusted into the hands of someone whose family does not live in the country, adding that the Ministerdesignate for the region, Mr. Zuugah Tiigah has very little knowledge about local governance in Ghana and the happenings in the Upper East region. Meanwhile, many have questioned the sincerity of members of various groups fighting for and against the cause of Dr. Avea Nsoh. Some of the leaders of the groups, including the Concerned Tertiary Students of the Upper East, are said to be personalities, who could have personally gained if Dr. Avea Nsoh had stayed in office for a protracted time. There are some persons who also believe that the series of demonstrations and press conferences that followed the removal of Dr. Avea Nsoh and the nomination of James Zuugah Tiigah were informed by political and tribal considerations.
