A 34-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly posing as a soldier and duping people in some parts of Accra. Daniel Kojo Azameti, who claims to be a professional driver, is currently in police custody, following reports from people who claim to have been duped by a man in military uniform. On May 14, 2014, one of the victims, Ms Christiana Amoani, a Ghanaian based in Italy, reported to the Military Police at Burma Camp in Accra that a man in military uniform had promised to help her clear some vehicles at the Takoradi Harbour. Soldier�s promise to clear vehicles According to the victim, someone whose name was given as Peter introduced the said �military man� to her. Ms Amoani said the military man had assured her that he could use his influence to clear the vehicles without challenges. She told the Military Police that she had paid GH�3,600 to the �soldier�, who had introduced himself as Daniel Azameti. However, a few days after she paid the money, the soldier went into hiding. Report to Military Police When Ms Amoani realised that she had been duped, she reported the matter to the Military Police at Burma Camp. A check of military records revealed that the said man was not a soldier. The Military Police, which had received other complaints concerning the same issue, arrested the suspect on July 8, 2014 after they had carried out extensive investigations. Upon a search in the fake soldier�s house the Military Police found accoutrements such as uniforms, a pair of boots, a T-shirt and a muffler. A framed picture of Azameti dressed in full military regalia was also found displayed in his living room. The Military Police also found Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results bearing different names and pictures in the suspect�s house. It was suspected that the certificates belonged to some of the fake soldier�s victims. Some of the victims had reported to the Kaneshie and the Ashaiman Police stations that a man parading himself as a military officer had taken money from them on the pretext of helping them to be recruited into the Ghana Armed Forces. Uniform is for late father Upon Azameti�s arrest, the Military Police handed him over to the police. His accomplice, identified only as Peter, is currently on the run. The Odorkor District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Abraham Acquaye, said the suspect had initially been handed over to the Kaneshie Police before he was transferred to the Odorkor Police on July 10. He said the suspect, in his caution statement, had claimed that the military uniform belonged to his late father who was a soldier.
