The New Juaben Municipal Teachers Savings Scheme Association has cut the sod for the construction of a GH�630,000. office complex in Koforidua. The scheme, which started in 1998 with 102 members, currently has 1,300 members comprising some teachers from Yilo Krobo, Akuapem North, Suhum and East Akim districts. Among others, the scheme seeks to promote the general welfare of the members, provide quick financial assistance to them for productive purposes and to operate as a pension supplement to its members. It also assists its members to adequately prepare for retirement, and to accumulate funds to serve as start-up for teachers� housing scheme. In his welcome address, Mr F. A. Lartey, the vice chairman of the board of the association, said the scheme had acquired plots of land for allocation to its members, had assisted in funding the education of their children, and had also helped others to put up their own houses prior to retirement. He said in spite of a few challenges, the scheme had attained the set target and assured the members that their investments were yielding the needed dividends and results. The New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Kwaku Owusu Acheampong, who cut the sod, lauded the teachers for establishing the scheme. He said government�s efforts in providing housing would not be enough and that such initiatives by individuals, groups, and organisations to complement the government�s efforts were highly commendable. �For teachers of New Juaben and some individuals from the other sister districts to come together and establish a scheme which has cushioned members in one way or the other is in line with the government�s policies and is commendable�, he said.
