More Rural Communities To Get Safe Water By 2015

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) would provide safe and reliable water supply schemes in many more rural communities between now and 2015. The Agency is, however, unlikely to achieve its 76 percent rural water coverage by 2015 in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Agencys revised Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) 2008-2015. The target achieved so far is approximately 64 per cent, Clement Bugase, Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, has said in an interview with reporters during an inspection of some water schemes in the Volta Region, by the Board of the Agency. The Schemes are the Kpalime and Tongor Scheme in South Dayi District from the GWCL Kpeve reservoir; Emli Israel, Afadjato-South District; Gravity, Mechanized Boreholes in Nkwanta in Nkwanta-South District; and the Kpassa and Damanko Scheme on the Oti River in Nkwanta-North. Mr Bugase said though the 76 per cent target may be missed, the margin may be narrow and called on District Chief Executives and Community Water Management Boards to ensure that their schemes were operated, managed and maintained efficiently. He said 1200 bore holes would be provided with funding by the World Bank and the International Development Agency (IDA) while 400 broken down boreholes would be rehabilitated in the Northern Region. A total of 72 mechanized boreholes would also be provided to serve 680,000 people. The French Development Agency would also fund 680 boreholes with pumps and 15 small town mechanized systems to provide water to about 300,000 people. Mr Bugase said 120 boreholes fitted with hand pumps would be provided with funding from the Korea Development Agency, including seven mechanized systems. He said some non-governmental organisations would also provide additional rural and community water schemes. Mr Bugase said so far 500 rural communities have been provided with safe and reliable water schemes while 600 others in line to be served. The picture is not gloomy at all, he assured.
