Portuphy Takes Off Tomorrow

Mr. Kofi Portuphy, the Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is stepping up preparations to contest for the National Chairmanship position of the ruling party; the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mr. Portuphy will officially launch his campaign tomorrow ahead of the October national delegates� congress of the NDC to elect national officers. The NADMO boss has been tipped by some delegates as the �hot favorite� in the race where he will be facing off with the incumbent Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei and Daniel Kwasi Abodakpi, a former Minister of Trade . Among people gunning for the party�s topmost job, Mr. Portuphy is regarded as one with a better fellow feeling for the party�s grassroots, having thoroughly interfaced particularly in his line of duty of managing disasters nationwide as required from a NADMO Coordinator. Reports gathered by this paper indicates that since he indicated his interest in the party�s chairmanship position , he has been able to attract support from several regional, constituency and ward executives of the party. They believe he posses the organizational ability needed to win the party the general elections in 2016.He has promised to give the ruling party a major facelift if given the green light. Mr. Portuphy, now 64 years old, has been in the thick of affairs of the NDC for decades. He is currently a Vice Chairman of the party . He has been the director of elections for the NDC and was in charged of elections at the last two NDC election victory . Mr. Portuphy has also amassed vast experiences in the area of mass mobilization . Mr Kofi Portuphy is overwhelming favorite for the chairmanship position. In 1990, he was appointed the PNDC Deputy Secretary for the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) and Mobilization and with an additional responsibility in 1991 as the Mayor of Accra. In 1997 he was appointed the Special Redeployment Officer for the National Redeployment Programme.In April 1996, Mr. Kofi Portuphy was tasked by the Government of Ghana to establish the National Disaster Management Organization and by September the same year, he managed to get an Act of parliament, Act 517, 1996 passed which established NADMO and he emerged as the National Co-ordinator. He has delivered a number of thought provoking presentations on both local and international platforms. He is also a seasoned politician having been in charge of grassroots mobilization since 1981. sir Portuphy is also a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who has made some humble but significant contribution to the development of Ghana. In Jul 2010, Mr Portuphy was in Japan, Belgium and the Netherlands where he further trained in emergency techniques in Earthquake and Tsunami response Management, Emergency Rapid Response in Road Accident Extrication as well as Oil and Gas Emergencies.Mr. Kofi Portuphy established the Sanzule Regugee Camp in the Western Region and the Budumburam Refugee Camp in the Central Region which is hosting Liberian refugees in Ghana. He also established the Klikor Refugee Cam in the Volta Region which hosted Togolese Refugees and has in recent years established four more camps, Eagle Star and Ampen in the Western Region, Adjeikrom Refugee Camp in the Central Region and Fetentaa Camp in the Brong � Ahafo Region which host Ivorian Refugees. Significantly, refugees in the various camps were trained and up � skilled and therefore acquired various professions and new skills. Characteristic of his humanitarian nature, Mr. Portuphy led various rescue teams from Ghana into war � thorn African Countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast to search for the rescue Ghanaians who were trapped and stranded in those counties. In the process, he ended up rescuing non-Ghanaian nationals who were part of the evacuees who transited into their countries. His humanitarian activities earned him a knighthood from the International Order of the International Civil Defence Organisation in Geneva in March 2014.
