Lawra Prepares To Start Street Naming

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, the Upper West Regional Minister, has appealed to people in the region to avoid controversy in naming of streets and propose names that would be acceptable to all. Alhaji Sulemana said names that would be given to streets should seek to recount the history of the town, its legacies and traditional rulers and that people should be careful in their choice of names. Let us propose names of objects, organisations and personalities who are development focused or seek to portray our culture, he said. This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at a durbar of chiefs and people in Lawra. The Regional Minister urged the street naming committee to sensitize the public and seek names from stakeholders for the 97 streets in Lawra. Alhaji Sulemana said the system, when completed, would ensure that undeveloped land schemes would be properly demarcated to clearly guard against encroachment on roads, proposed schools lands and other areas earmarked for public use. He said the street naming would aid in directing people to specific destinations and help emergency services such as the Ghana National Fire Service and National Ambulance Service to be more effective in responding to distress calls. Alhaji Sulemana said the system would also improve data collection at the household level for planning purposes. Mr. Paschal Dery, Lawra District Chief Executive, said the district assembly had put a premium on the street naming to actualize President John Dramani Mahamas directive.
