Rape Victim Demands HIV Test Of Doctor

The Tema Regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), is investigating a medical doctor for allegedly raping a 22-year-old student. When the victim went to the Urban Health in Tema for medical examination, a female doctor on duty reportedly refused to attend to her because her case involved a fellow doctor, according to Police source. The victim told The Chronicle that she is presently traumatized, especially when the doctor did not use any protection during the act. According to her, she is now going to undergo an HIV test to ascertain her current status. Narrating her ordeal, the victim, who is a student of a tertiary institution, said she and Dr. Nicholas Mensah Woode have been platonic friends over the past five months, during which time, none of them expressed interest in the other. According to her, last Monday, July 14, at about 8pm, she went to visit the doctor who is single, and for some unexplained reasons, he went out of the house, leaving her alone in the house and returned at midnight, at a time when there was no vehicle for her to go back to her hostel. She further stated that, Dr. Woode prevailed upon her to pass the night in his residence so that she could leave in the early hours of the morning. Because she trusted him, she obliged and went to sleep on the doctors bed. The lady stated that the doctor went out and upon returning, pinned her to the bed and managed to find his way between her thighs, but she still continued to struggle with him. She further stated that, not even her effort to firmly grab his male organ was deterring enough. Dr. Woode reportedly succeeded in having sexual intercourse with the victim without protection. The doctor, who turns 32 on September 26, the same date of birth with the lady, reportedly fell asleep and at about 04:30am, he woke up and took her (victim) in his private car to the Tema motorway roundabout, after offering her GH90. According to the victim, she later reported the incident to her brother and mother, who lodged a complaint at the Tema Regional DOVVSU. She further stated that, she was issued with a Police Medical form and when she went to the Urban Health, the lady-doctor on duty refused to attend to her because the case involved a fellow doctor. The Chronicle can confirm that the doctor was arrested last Friday, the 18th of July, 2014, and was granted self-recognizance bail the same day, after his caution statement was obtained. The lady, who is now shuttling between school and hospital, is calling on the authorities to compel Dr. Mensah Woode to also undergo similar HIV test to enable her to determine the proper clinical attention. In a related development, a source at the Regional Police Command has hinted that the case will be pushed to the courts to determine the next line of action, especially when it involves rape. When contacted, the Tema Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, Superintendent of Police, Rebecca Nyamah, confirmed her outfit is investigating such a case. Stay tuned.
