The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has expressed worry about cases of illegal connections saying they are a drain on the revenue.
The company, has, therefore, called for public vigilance to stop the illegal practice.
The managing director of ECG, Mr. William Hutton Mensah, said this on Friday, at a news conference on revenue generations, losses, illegal connections and development projects to improve system delivery in the Western Region.
�As an industry player, ECG is committed to checking illegal connections by taking immediate actions. We need to perform and get all the revenue by reducing the losses to appreciable standing,� he said.
He said, illegal connections had sometimes been associated with some third party contractors and sometimes some ECG staff, but added, that, anytime offenders were arrested, they were prosecuted.
Mr. Hutton-Mensah said the company had begun a programme to educate the workers on self-discipline, adding that, ECG would not entertain acts of indiscipline.
�If we apprehend the person, we forward the matter for the judicial processes to continue,� he explained.
As at 2011, he said, the loss level was 27.2 per cent and by the end of 2013, it had dropped to 23 per cent, saying that, the company had made some savings with that performance.
The PURC, he said had given the company a loss reduction target of 21 per cent, which he explained, was not an easy task, adding that, the international standard was 15 per cent.
He explained that in any distribution system, there were bound to be some losses, saying that, a reduction of 4.2 per cent could save the company about GH100 million.
Mr. Hutton-Mensah said, ECG, as a distribution company, was desirous to provide quality services to its customers and urged customers to pay their bills promptly.
He said the company had earmarked GH20 million to rehabilitate and expand some primary sub-stations at Keta, Takoradi to the Takoradi Harbour, Ghana Cement (GHACEM), Railway, Apremdo Military Barracks, Apowa and its environs.
�Aside these, we are also embarking on projects in the districts including Tarkwa, Bogoso, Enchi Asan Kragwa, Shama, Essiama and hoping to establish district officers and customers centers, to get closer to our customers and provide a conducive service to the them,� he assured.
