Management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says at least GH₵120 million has been invested in the Western Region in the last one year. This amount, the company noted, supported network quality, infrastructure and service delivery in the region. The investment, the management of the company explained, has been directed into expansion of network and quality, as well as create avenue for rehabilitation works on major facilities. The company announced this at a news briefing organised in Takoradi on Friday. Managing Director (MD) of ECG, Mr William Hutton-Mensah said as part of the expansion process, the company continued its rehabilitation programme and gradually rolled out new projects by building primary and sub-stations, and other important infrastructure in urban and rural areas to improve service delivery and network quality. He said Takoradi township, Apremdo, Ketan, Takoradi Harbour area, Apowa, among other communities in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis, would benefit from the ongoing expansion. The MD said the exercise would also include the upgrading of district offices in most of the growing urban centres in the region. These include Shama, Tarkwa, Bogoso, Enchi, Asankragwa, Sefwi, Wassa Akropong and Besiem. Mr Hutton-Mensa indicated that only improved revenue generation would aid the company's quest to realise the execution of projects required for quality service delivery. He said the desire of ECG is to remain a viable state institution running sustainably on profitable basis. According to the MD, a profitable ECG should be able to pay suppliers of power and undertake infrastructure projects within the system, on grounds of improving on service delivery and quality. Mr Hutton-Mensah said future plans regarding the introduction of prepaid metering system to all parts of the country should not be ruled out. He said because of difficulties of infrastructure in most parts of rural Ghana, ratification of faults has been very difficult. According to Mr Hutton-Mensah, the company has therefore decided to build an ultra-modern warehouse in the Western Region to keep important items and facilities required for constant faults ratification and power supply reliability. The company is also establishing bulk supply contact at Debiso to work on facilities in the northern part of the region. In addition, it is establishing network automation system to improve on monitoring of its networks and activities of clients in both urban and rural areas.
