MPs Call For Intensive Public Sensitization On Ebola

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Juaboso in the Western Region has expressed worry over the deadly Ebola disease at the various entry points into the nation. Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Hon. Akandoh noted down the dangers that the disease pose to human health and therefore called on appropriate authorities in the health sector and the country at large to nip it in the bud. According to research, Ebola disease has killed over 600 Africans, out of which 50 are reported to be medical practitioners. The disease has also turned lethal and due to its incurable nature has gained the potency to even scare doctors and nurses who are supposed to attend to the patients. News about a Liberian affected by the disease making some transits in the country before storming neighbouring country, Nigeria and other places before being diagnosed of the disease have since raised the panic level of some Ghanaians. The reports seem to have sent fears down the spine of Ghanaians, who have become even much scared after the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) also revealed that their personnel do not have the requisite skills to fight the disease. The GIS disclosed that its outfit is not adequately equipped to identify and treat persons with the disease. According to the Head of Public Affairs at the GIS, Francis Palmdetti; "A significant number of our personnel on the ground are not well equipped in terms of the basic protective gear they need to even protect themselves let alone be in the position to kind of hold anybody to suspect having the virus." Addressing issue, the Juaboso MP called for intensive sensitization into the disease and a quick response from the Ministry of Health to unearth the mystery surrounding the Ebola disease. He also appealed to the authorities to take pragmatic steps to check the porosity of Ghana's borders to victims of the disease. Sharing his thoughts on the same issue and on the same platform, New Patriotic Party MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh called on government to expedite action to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Hon. Dompreh underscored the poor governance system by the Mahama government and also bemoaned the dormant approach by the current administration in steering the affairs of the country. He thus called on the government to treat the disease with much seriousness and devise ways to counteract any likely epidemic of the Ebola disease in the nation by swiftly financing and equipping the health sector.
