SPEFA Educates Ga South Municipality On Social Accountability

Officials of the Social Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (SPEFA) have dialogued with representatives of the Ga South Municipality to educate them on how they can contribute towards transparent and accountable governance in their communities. The aim of the dialogue is to encourage residents of Weija and its environs to participate in the discussion of critical issues affecting them during the public hearings, and also to hold assembly members accountable towards their socio-economic their well-being. Mr Emmanuel Tettey, a SPEFA Consultant, said District Assemblies were created to give holistic development to the people through active local level participation and urged citizens to attend assembly meetings to have their say in matters concerning their communities and to make concrete decisions for progress. He said SPEFA promotes accountability at various stages throughout the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of local government programmes for development. Mr Kojo Anane, SPEFA Programmes Officer, said when ordinary citizens are engaged in the planning and development of their localities they make duty bearers accountable to them. �When communities engage in social accountability there is going to be an improved governance, financial efficiency, improved service delivery, poverty reduction and employment for wealth creation and development effectiveness,� he said. Mr Kwabena Denkyi, the representative of Mallam, called on the government to solve the annual problem of floods at Mallam and its surrounding communities.
