A suspected robber and his accomplice who shot at a policeman at the Airport Residential Area in Accra have been arrested. The incident occurred when the policeman, General Lance Corporal Gideon Dutt, was responding to an alleged attempt by the suspects and two others to snatch a taxi from its driver. Those arrested, both 24, are Victor Richmond Ato Sagoe, sa Level 300 student of the Valley View University, and Prince Amoah, alias Narrow, unemployed. Two other suspects, Nana Yaw Poku and another whose name was given only as TT, are currently on the run. Briefing journalists, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohonu, said about 12:30 a.m. on July 29, 2014, the four suspects hired the services of a Toyota Corolla taxi driver, Bismark Akwei, from the Osu Oxford Street to Dzorwulu in Accra. On the way, he said, Sagoe, who was in the front seat, asked the driver if he could speak Ga and the driver responded in the negative, even though he was Ga. When they got to a dark place at the Airport Residential Area, Sagoe told his accomplices in Ga that the area was a convenient place to snatch the taxi. �The driver, on hearing that, drove straight to a police snap checkpoint mounted at Zenith Bank within the Airport Residential Area and alerted the policemen on duty,� Mr Yohonu said. The four suspects, on seeing the police, alighted from the taxi, but they were ordered by the policemen on duty to kneel down for a search to be conducted on them. Police shot Mr Yohonu said when it got to Sagoe�s turn to be searched, he pulled out a pistol and shot General Lance Corporal Dutt of the Airport Police Station in the chest. Although the policeman fell, he did not sustain any injury because of a bullet proof vest he wore under his uniform. The four suspects took to their heels in an attempt to escape arrest but they were given a hot chase by the other policemen on duty who suceeded in apprehending Sagoe and Amoah, while Poku and TT managed to escape. The police retrieved an empty shell and three pieces of live ammunition at the scene. Confession Later when a search was conducted in Amoah�s room, the police retrieved 15 more pieces of live ammunition. During interrogation, Amoah and Sagoe were said to have told the police that they had met on July 25, 2014 and agreed to embark on a car-snatching expedition. According to the police, Amoah confessed that he had invited Poku and TT, who were his robbery associates, to join them in the operation. The Accra Regional Police Commander said the suspects claimed they had succeeded in snatching six cars in the past.
