2 Killer Highway Robbers Nabbed (Photo)

Two out of alleged five notorious armed robbers who are said to have specialized in attacking travelers between Kade in the Eastern Region and Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, collecting their monies and other valuables, have been apprehended by the New Abirem police. The arrested suspects are Padmore Antwi, aka Joe, 24 and Kwame Antwi, 25. The two were apprehended after they had allegedly killed a driver in one of their attacks on July 24, 2014, after robbing the occupants of a 207 vehicle of their monies and other properties. They are currently in the custody of the New Abirem police assisting in investigations while the three others are being looked for by the police. Briefing DAILY GUIDE, DSP Seth Yirenkyi, New Abirem District Police Commander, said the suspects were apprehended on July 25, with the help of some residents of the area. He said on July 24, 2014, around 6:30 pm, the New Abirem police had information that a 207 bus with registration number GR 1417 R travelling from Kade to Kumasi, had been attacked by a five-member gang of armed robbers between James Town and Old Abirem. A police patrol team from New Abirem was dispatched to the scene and with the help of people of James Town, suspects Padmore Antwi and Kwame Antwi were apprehended. Victims of the attack later identified the two as members of the gang that attacked them and shot the driver that same day. They have since been remanded into police custody to reappear on August 9, 2014 while investigations continue. The police were later told that the driver of the bus had fled into the bush with gunshot wounds. The driver, identified as Kofi Asare, 42, according to the passengers, was signaled by the five men, who emerged from the bush holding cutlasses and pieces of stick, but he declined and so they shot him through the windscreen, injuring him in the process. Police searched the bush for the driver but to no avail. With the help of some residents of the area, the driver was later located in a nearby bush badly injured in the face and chest. He was rushed to the New Abirem Government Hospital for medical care but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the Agyarkwa Hospital, Nkawkaw for preservation and autopsy. Police preliminary investigations revealed that the 207 bus was from Kade after distributing eggs to some customers in the area and heading towards Kumasi. Three of the passengers� mobile phones and an amount of GH�4,800 were taken from them in the attack.
