Tdi Port Expansion TO Cost $19m

The Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr Richard Anamoo says the authority is determined to expand the Takoradi Port to increase maritime trade in the country and the West African sub-region. He stated this at a public forum organized by the GPHA on Friday, on proposals for the Takoradi Port expansion programme. Some of the changes he mentioned, included expanding the draft, the cargo handling and clearance, loading base and the break water, while constructing a gas terminal for the industry. Mr Anamoo said for example that, manganese and bauxite was loaded onto smaller boats and then lifted into bigger vessels resulting in double hull. He said the Takoradi Port would also need tugboats and installation of electronic ring fenced cameras 24 hours daily, including 200 feet cranes, one of which had already been delivered. The berths and the buoys, he added, would be expanded to receive bigger vessels, adding that the breakwater was at the moment, shallow and bigger vessel could berth there. Mr Anamoo assured that the expansion of the Sekondi Fishing Harbour would start in December, at the cost of $19 million. The Director of the Takoradi Port, Captain James Owusu-Koranteng said, since 1928, there had not been any major port expansion and some businesses had gone extinct because of obsolete equipment and facilities that did not support their businesses.
