Voter Reg Exercise: Ghanas Borders Poorly Protected Kwabena Agyapong

The General Secretary of Ghanas biggest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyapong, has called on the security agencies to scale up their surveillance at the countrys borders in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission. According to him, the porous nature of the surveillance as it exists now makes it easy for foreigners to sneak into the country and register. Ghanas Electoral Commission on Monday, July 4, began a nationwide process across 6,000 centers, to register Ghanaians who turned 18 after the 2012 general elections and adults who could not register during the previous registration exercises. Mr. Agyapong who is currently touring the registration centers believes the weaker nature of the security at the borders can compromise the integrity of the exercise. Some areas in the Volta region are registering minors and we have reported to the Keta electoral officer. Some of the Aflao registration centers are in obscure areas and the border is opened so people from Togo could easily enter the country and register The IGP and other security agencies must rise to their duties because people from Togo could easily enter and register in the country. The security officials at the border must at least try and secure the border. I hope the CDS and the IGP will really do something about this, about four of our borders are unprotected, the NPP Chief Scribe lamented on Accra-based Okay FM, Friday.
