CHOLERA ALERT: We Need To Be Cautious With Public Eating - Health Expert Warns

A Senior Health Service Administrator with the La Polyclinic, Philip Afeti Korto has advised the general public to be cautious in their public eating habits. According to him, the outbreak of cholera is affecting more people in Ghana than the deadly Ebola virus. He noted that, last night alone [August 12, 2014] 25 new cholera cases were recorded at the La General Hospital. The cholera unit at the infirmary, he indicated was originally designed to cater for 13 patients but it now receives far more than the approved number per-day. A situation he finds worrying. Our cholera bay can take only 13 patients. Some patients are nursed on benches with mattresses that have been donated, he said. More than 3,000 cholera cases have so far been recorded in the Greater Accra region alone since July with more than sixteen deaths recorded in just one week. Speaking to JOY FM, Wednesday, Mr. Philip Afeti Korto revealed that some patients contract the cholera from eating Kenkey, Waakye and other foods. He however advised the populace to be prudent with the kind of foods purchased outside after insisting that all must cultivate the habit of hand washing. Preventive measures such as hand washing, boiling water before drinking etc. should be taken to avoid Cholera, he counseled. Adding that, Doctors and nurses are now overwhelmed by the cholera cases.
