Who Commands The Radio Airwaves?

The never-ending debate over which radio stations have the largest audience in Ghana seems to have been settled by the frequent and independent survey-based research conducted by Ipsos MediaCT, into share of radio listening in Ghana. Though the 100 plus stations across the country brag to have the largest audience, the Ipsos survey conducted in Ghanas two most populated capital cities, Accra and Kumasi, for the month of May, 2014, showed just about four stations in each of the capitals are actually commanding the radio airwaves. KUMASI Ipsos conducted the survey into the daily listening trends of radio in Kumasi after which the results were compiled into weekly percentages. For the first week in May 2014, Kessben FM and Hello FM had the same share of radio listening in Kumasi, scoring 12 percent each. Fox FM and Ash Fm followed with nine percent each, while Angel Fm had eight percent. Again, in the second week of May the top five stations in Kumasi were Kessben FM, leading with 13 percent, Hello FM following closely with 12 percent, Angel FM with 10 percent, Fox Fm with nine percent and Ash FM scoring eight percent. For the third week, Kumasis five top radio stations with the largest listening audience was led by Hello FM with 13 percent, Angel FM with 11 percent, Fox and Kessben FM with 10 percent each and Nhyira FM with eight percent. The fourth week in Kumasi had Angel FM leading with 15 percent, Hello Fm with 14 percent, Kessben FM with 13 percent, Fox Fm with nine percent and Ash FM with seven percent. In the Fifth week of May, Hello Fm and Angel Fm had 12 percent each, followed by Fox FM with 10 percent, while Kessben FM and Ash FM drew with nine percent. ACCRA In the Greater Accra Region, the survey for the Month of May was also conducted on a daily basis after which the results were compiled into weeks. A look at the daily trends, as well as the hourly trends, exposed a rather interesting revelation that although Peace FM topped in four out of the five weeks, its flagship programme, Kokookroo Morning Show, did not attract the largest listening audience to the station, but rather Peace News at 6pm. Though Kokrookoo proved to be the most listened-to programme on morning radio in Accra, it did not attract as much high marks as Peace News @ 6 did, an indication that the host, Chairman General Kwame Sefa Kayi, may have to buckle up his belt a bit more. The top five stations that have the largest audience share in Accra were as follows: Week one had Peace FM leading with 20 percent, followed by Joy FM with 10 percent, Adom FM with nine percent, Okay Fm with six percent and Citi Fm with five percent. Week two had Adom FM leading with 15 percent, followed by Joy and Peace with 11 percent each, Okay FM with 10 percent and YFM with five percent. Week three again had Peace FM leading with 15 percent, Joy FM and Adom FM following with 11 percent each, Okay FM with nine percent and YFM again with five percent. Week four had Peace FM leading with 14 percent, Adom FM and Joy FM still following with 11 percent each just as the previous week, Okay FM dropping to seven percent and Oman FM appearing with five percent. The fifth and final weeks of May had Peace FM leading with 15 percent, Adom Fm following with 13 percent, Joy Fm with 11 percent, Okay FM with nine percent and YFM with four percent. None of the other stations made it to the top five for the month of May.
